Privacy Policy

SurfPopup (“the app”) is a surf pop-up coaching app for iPhone, developed by Tyler Nam. This policy explains what data the app handles and where it goes. The clips you film are saved to your own photo library, and your pose data and scores stay on your device — and, if you keep iCloud backup on, in your own private iCloud. The app also sends a limited set of anonymous product analytics (see “Product analytics” below), and the purchase information needed to manage a Pro subscription, described below.
What the app collects
Your videos and pose data are never sent to us or to any third party. The clips you film live in your own photo library, and your pose data and scores live on your iPhone and, optionally, in your private iCloud (see “iCloud backup” below). The app has no accounts, no user-facing servers, and no sign-in. A limited, anonymous slice of your scores and onboarding answers is sent to an analytics provider so we can see how the app is used — see “Product analytics” below for exactly what that includes.
Where your data lives:
- Video clips of your pop-up are saved to your own photo library (a “SurfPopup” album), so you can keep, replay, and manage them yourself. The app keeps no separate copy — it reads a clip back from your library only to play it alongside your analysis.
- Pose data and scores produced by analyzing those clips on-device, stored in the app. They remain even if you later delete a clip from your library — a session with no clip still keeps its score and skeleton replay.
- Profile details you enter during onboarding (name, experience level, stance, goals). These personalize coaching and stay on your device — your name is never sent anywhere.
All video analysis (pose estimation and scoring) runs entirely on-device.
Product analytics
SurfPopup uses PostHog, a product analytics service, to understand how the app is used and to improve it — for example, where people drop off during onboarding or which screens get used. This is separate from the crash diagnostics described below.
What's sent to PostHog:
- App usage events — screens viewed and actions taken (e.g. recording started, workout completed, paywall viewed).
- Score numbers attached to a few events (e.g. the score shown on a results screen), rounded to a whole number.
- Onboarding answers — experience level, stance, goals, and similar selections made during setup. Free-text answers like your name are not included, only that the step was completed.
- A random device identifier generated by PostHog, not your name, email, or Apple ID.
Your videos and pose data are never included. PostHog is not used for advertising, and Pop does not use Apple's App Tracking Transparency identifier or share this data with ad networks. You can read PostHog's privacy policy at posthog.com/privacy.
iCloud backup (optional)
SurfPopup can back up your sessions so a lost or replaced phone doesn't mean lost progress. When backup is on and you're signed in to iCloud, the app copies your analyzed sessions (scores and pose data) and your onboarding profile to the private iCloud database of your own Apple account. Your video clips are not part of this backup — they live in your photo library, which iCloud Photos backs up separately if you have it on.
- Only you can access it. The backup lives in your personal iCloud storage, handled by Apple. We have no server of our own and no way to read, browse, or export your backup.
- You're in control. Turn backup off any time in Settings → iCloud backup inside the app. If you're not signed in to iCloud, nothing is ever uploaded.
- Deletions sync. Deleting a session in the app (or using “Delete all data”) also deletes its iCloud copy.
Apple processes iCloud data under its own privacy policy and your iCloud terms.
Camera, photo library & motion
- Camera — used only to record your pop-up when you choose to film.
- Photo library — used to save the clips you film (a “SurfPopup” album), to read them back for playback alongside your analysis, and to import clips you choose to analyze. Nothing from your library is sent off your device.
- Motion — used only to help you level the camera while filming.
Subscription purchases
If you subscribe to SurfPopup Pro, your purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store, using StoreKit. We use RevenueCat, Inc., a subscription-management service, to validate purchases and keep your Pro status in sync.
To do this, RevenueCat receives:
- An anonymous identifier for your subscription — not your name, email, or Apple ID.
- Your purchase and transaction data (Apple's receipt), needed to confirm and manage your subscription.
- Basic device and app information (device type, operating system, app version).
RevenueCat does not receive your videos, pose data, scores, or profile — those stay on your device as described above. RevenueCat processes this data on our behalf, as our data processor, and does not use it for its own advertising or marketing. You can read RevenueCat's privacy policy at revenuecat.com/privacy.
If you don't have a Pro subscription, no purchase data is generated and this section does not apply to you.
Crash reports
If the app crashes, Apple may share diagnostics with the developer through Apple's standard, opt-in analytics program (controlled in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements). The app also keeps anonymous crash logs locally on your device; they are shared only if you choose to attach them when contacting support.
Deleting your data
Settings → Delete all data in the app permanently removes every session (your scores and pose data) and your profile — including their iCloud backup copies. Deleting the app from your iPhone removes everything the app stored on the device.
Three things those steps do not delete:
- The clips in your photo library. The pop-up clips you filmed are yours, in your own library, so the app never deletes them — delete them in Photos whenever you like. A session whose clip you've removed still keeps its score and skeleton replay.
- Your iCloud backup, if you only delete the app. Deleting the app doesn't touch iCloud, so an existing backup stays in your iCloud account. Use “Delete all data” inside the app first, or remove SurfPopup's data in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.
- Pro purchase records. If you've subscribed to SurfPopup Pro, Apple and RevenueCat retain purchase and transaction records as required for financial and legal recordkeeping, even after you delete the app. These records are anonymous — they aren't tied to your name or Apple ID (see “Subscription purchases” above). To request deletion, contact compliance@revenuecat.com or us at the address below.
Children
SurfPopup does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, beyond the limited, anonymous purchase data described above, which is not tied to your identity.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of the app changes how data is handled (for example, an optional online coach), this policy will be updated and the change noted in the App Store release notes before it takes effect.
